OB/GYN Deserts are Widespread—and Worsening
An estimated 2.2 million US women currently live in OB/GYN deserts1—and the future shows no signs of improvement. In a survey, 63% of OB/GYNs said they likely would not take a position in a restrictive state.2 As a result, quality of care has diminished. In states with abortion bans, 40% of OB/GYNs say they've felt constrained during pregnancy-related medical emergencies. Additionally, 64% of OB/GYNs believe maternal mortality has worsened since the Dobbs ruling.3

Applications to Medical Schools Have Dramatically Decreased
From 2022 to 2023, the number of US MD senior applicants to programs in states with abortion bans dropped 10.5%—twice the decrease in states without restrictions.1 And in a survey of third- and fourth-year medical students, nearly 60% said they were unlikely to apply to programs in states that restrict abortions.2
